How to Prepare Your Roof for Winter

dreamstime_xxl_12930956The summer was a long one, and many of us have been dreaming about fall for weeks. Well, the first official day of fall has come and gone, and although winter is probably the last thing on your mind at this point, now is the perfect time to start preparing your roof for the severe weather ahead. Here at Sargeant’s Roofing, we are dedicated to keeping the roofing system on your home strong and reliable, and that’s why we’ve come up with this list of tips to help you prepare your roof for winter.

1. Make sure that your attic is properly ventilated.

Ventilation is essential for preventing ice and snow from building up on your roof and creating destructive ice dams. If you are unsure about if your home is properly ventilated or not, get it inspected by a professional.

2. Inspect your asphalt or cedar shingles.

Whether you have a cedar roof or an asphalt roof, it’s important to be on the lookout for shingles that are loose, damaged or completely missing. You should also keep an eye out for curling, cupping or cracking shingles, which ice and snow can work its way under, causing leaks and other issues. Repair or replace any missing or damaged shingles before the temperature starts to drop.

These are just a couple of the many steps you’ll need to take to get your roof ready to handle the harsh, cold weather ahead. In our next blog, we’ll be going over several more tips for preparing your roof for winter, so if you would like to learn more, please stay tuned or contact us today!.
