Tips for Choosing a Roofing Contractor You Can Trust

Whether you’re in the market for roof repair or replacement, hiring the right contractor is essential.

Have you had a chance to read our latest blog yet? If you have, then you already know that hiring the wrong contractor for roof replacement could leave you with new roof failure. But it’s important to find the right contractor every time you need roofing services in Edmonton, no matter how big or small the project may be. There are many roofing contractors available, though, so how do you choose the right one? Here are a few tips from the experts at Sargeant’s Roofing to help you find the right contractor for your roofing needs:

#1. Ask friends and family for local referrals.

Finding the right roofing contractor can be tricky because every roofer will tell you that they are the best roofer for the job. Getting a few referrals from your friends and family can give you added peace of mind because it gives you the chance to work with someone that your friends and family — the people you trust the most — have had a good experience with. Finding a local contractor is also important, as they will already be familiar with the local regulations and codes.

#2. Make sure you hire a roofer who is insured.

Before you hire a roofer to work on your property, it’s essential to make sure that they are properly insured. If the roofer fails to install or repair your roof properly, or they get hurt while working on your roof, you could be held financially responsible for covering the damages if the roofer you hire is not properly insured. When you meet with a roofing contractor prior to actually hiring them, ask for proof of insurance. If you want to be extra sure that they are insured, it doesn’t hurt to call the insurance carrier directly to double check that they are legitimate.

#3. Check their rating with the Better Business Bureau.

As we mentioned earlier, sifting through the many roofers who claim to the best at what they do can quickly become frustrating, but in addition to getting referrals from friends and family, checking the Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings can help to narrow down your choices a little bit.  Steer clear of any roofing contractors that have poor BBB ratings, or any roofers that don’t have ratings at all. If a contractor is not listed in the BBB, it could be a sign of a roofing scam.

#4. Get the 411 on common roofing scams.

All too often, homeowners who are desperate for roof repairs or other roofing services end up with shoddy work and no contractor to speak of to answer for it. Roofing scams are all too common, and one of the best ways to protect yourself from roofing scams is to understand what they are so that you can watch out for them. Storm chasing is one of the most common roofing scams. In a storm chaser scam, a “roofer” will often knock on your door after a storm and tell you that you have hail damage. They will often overcharge for materials or labor, and leave you with shoddy workmanship, while they skip town. Be very wary about any roofing contractors walking around your neighbourhood, knocking on doors after a storm, and take some time to learn about other common roofing scams.

These are just a few of the many tips that can help you weed out the wrong roofing contractors and help you find the right one for the job at hand. Would you like to learn more?
